How the score is worked out

  1. Carbohydrate and dry matter. Labels don't list carbohydrate, so it is what is left: NFE = 100 − protein − fat − fibre − ash − moisture (8% ash if you leave it out). Dry matter takes the water out, so dry and wet foods compare.
  2. Energy. The label's kcal/kg, or, without it, an estimate from the analysis (modified Atwater: 3.5 kcal/g protein and carbohydrate, 8.5 kcal/g fat, corrected for labels' known low bias). From it, the share of energy from protein (PEP), fat (PEF) and carbohydrate (PEC).
  3. AAFCO checks. The guarantees against the AAFCO minimums and maximums for the life stage.
  4. Protein. The first five ingredients are matched against our ingredient table and scored as one protein on its amino acids (quality Q). Q times crude protein, per 1,000 kcal, is the usable protein, scored against the dog's need.
  5. Fat. A base for meeting the crude fat and linoleic acid minimums, plus a bonus for omega-3s (ALA, EPA and DHA).
  6. Calcium : phosphorus is checked against 1:1 to 2:1.
  7. The score combines protein and fat into a score out of 10 and a tier of 1 to 4 bones; the percentile places it among the foods we've scored for the same life stage.

The confidence grade (A to D) says how much the result rests on what you entered rather than on assumptions: it drops when the energy has to be estimated, when the ingredients don't match our table, or when calcium, phosphorus or the fatty acids are missing. Full detail: How We Score.

Results are automated estimates from a label, not one of our reviewed scores, and not veterinary advice.
